What is Black Mold?
Most of us have heard something of the hazardous effects that mold can have on our health. You may also have heard of black mold, a kind of mold that is supposedly more harmful to your respiratory system than other types of mold. Today, we’re going to try to dispel some misconceptions around black mold. We will define what it is, how it can impact our health, and what can be done about it.
What is black mold?
The truth is that when people refer to black mold, the term is typically used unscientifically. Many molds that commonly occur in your household are black. That said, there is a species called Stachybotrys chartarum with the common name of ‘black mold.’ This is just one species of mold that you might find if you have a moisture problem in your home.
Make no mistake: mold can absolutely pose a serious health risk if not remediated. But there is no evidence to suggest that S. chartarum, or any other species of mold, can cause cancer or lung disease. Mold in your home is most certainly a problem. But many sensationalist fears surrounding ‘black mold’ are exaggerated and have no grounding in science. The bottom line is that black mold is just as dangerous as any other kind of mold.
How can it impact my health?
Like we said above, mold in your house is not known to cause cancer or lung disease. But mold can still pose a significant threat to your health, and some people are more sensitive to it than others. The umbrella term mycotoxicosis refers to all of the ill effects one can experience due to mold exposure. Symptoms can include coughing or wheezing, a sore throat, and itchy or red eyes. However, all of the above may actually be symptomatic of a mold allergy. At its worst, severe mold allergies can lead to shortness of breath. You should also keep in mind that mold is known to exasperate symptoms of existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma.
What can I do about it?
If you suspect your house has a moisture problem, mold remediation is essential. Because one of the most common ways moisture problems tend to develop is through the basement, you should be sure to look into basement waterproofing. If mold is already established in your home, you should seek out waterproofing experts who you can trust to carry out mold remediation. Don’t forget that a moisture problem can pose a structural threat to your home as well. Investing in basement waterproofing is a wise move for the longevity of your home as well as your health.
