Signs of Water Damage in Your Home
As we look forward (mostly) to the approach of fall, it is good to remind ourselves that the season tends to bring on more than just pumpkins. Fall in our area often brings a lot of damp and rainy weather, and between the rains of fall and the melting snow and ice of winter, flooding of the basement is a common, unwelcome experience for many homeowners (as well as one of the biggest motivators to seek basement waterproofing and foundation repair). And the resulting water damage from such an experience can be as messy or worse than the actual flood. While basement flooding is not the only way to get water damage in a home, it is one of the most recognizable. If you are wondering if you’ve experienced some of those less recognizable types, read on for some sure signs that you have water damage in your home.
The Smell
One of the biggest indicators of water damage is going to be the smell that is left behind. Even if you can’t see mold or mildew, you can smell it. If you are noticing a moldy or mildewy smell in your home, that is a sign that water has gotten somewhere it should not, and mold and mildew are growing.
Visible Mold
In some cases, you don’t just smell the mold, you see it too. If you have visible mold on anything in your home other than blue cheese, it’s a problem and a sure sign of water damage at some point. While the water may not still be there, it has created a breeding ground for mold, which can cause huge structural and health issues. While black mold is usually recognized as the worst (and most dangerous), mold in a home can be black, grey, orange, or brown, and any mold can cause respiratory issues over time.
Damage To Paint Or Drywall
Excessive moisture can cause visible damage, such as bulging drywall or peeling paint. If your drywall has started to bulge, warp, sag, or feel soft and spongey, it is a sign that it has suffered water damage. Likewise, if your paint of wallpaper are peeling, flaking, or bubbling, that is a sign that water has gotten under it.
Staining
Finally, even after the moisture goes away, there is usually some sort of visible staining left behind. If you notice that stains seem to be growing, that is a sign of continuing water damage, and it needs a professional’s eye and experience.
