What to Consider When Purchasing a Sump Pump
There are a variety of basement waterproofing options available for your home and a sump pump is a great one. It helps to collect excess water and release it out and away from your home. There are a lot of features and options that come with sump pumps, so here is what to consider when purchasing yours.
Manual vs. Automatic
A manual sump pump requires you to turn it on and off when you want it to run, while an automatic one will turn itself on when water levels reach a certain height. An automatic pump is naturally more convenient, but will cost you more than a manual one.
Horsepower
Typically, a sump pump ranges in horsepower from one-quarter to one-third. The amount of horsepower that you get for your pump depends on the area that you live in and the severity of your water problem. Powerful motors pump more water and are for people who have bigger moisture problems.
Head Pressure
The higher the head pressure is on your sump pump, the higher the pump can raise water. If your pump has a 12 ft head pressure, then the water will be able to raise to about that height. Your pump needs to be able to lift water up out of the sump pit and get to the outlet pipe.
Cord Length
This is something that you may not even think twice about before going to purchase a sump pump, but it is important. It isn’t recommended to use an extension cord for your pump. Rather, you need to plug it directly into a ground fault circuit interrupter outlet, so make sure the cord is long enough to reach to the nearest one.
Voltage
The standard voltage for an in-home sump pump is 110-volt circuits. However, if your home needs something stronger or you are looking for a sump pump for a commercial property, 220 and 4690 volt pumps are available as well.
Backup Systems
Investing in back up or alarm systems for your sump pump is completely optional and dependant on your personal needs. If you want to have extra protection in case of a power outage during a storm, it is a good idea to invest in a backup system. Alarm systems let you know when the sump pump isn’t working properly.
